“The people of Syria form part of the Arab Nation” : This basic and tremendous fact was embodied in the Constitution of the country as ratified by the Syrian Constituent Assembly on September 5, 1950. The constitutional provision, however, was no more than a confirmation of the feeling of the people of Syria who have been the pioneers of the Arab national movement since the advent of the twentieth century. Their struggle, first against Ottoman rule and later against French occupation, was characterised by a determination to enlarge the scope and bounds of that struggle to make it meet liberation movements of other Arab countries, which similarly aim at freeing the Arab Nation from all foreign domination, regardless of its form and source.
